Mr Biryani is a food catering service and restaurant located in the heart of Little India, which serves authentic biryani catered towards local Singaporean tastes. Chef Govinda Rajan has specially adapted the style of biryani to local Singaporean culinary history, ingredients and taste buds, and offers his signature Hyderabad Dhum Biryani for catering meals to homes, offices and events.
Biryani is a popular mixed rice dish, that has its origins among the Muslims in the Indian subcontinent, and is made with spices, rice and meat or vegetables. For Mr Biryani catering, the biryani is served in a large sharing dish for a group of 5 persons, to encourage friends, families and colleagues to spend some time together sharing their food. For Chef Govind, cooking biryani is about bringing people together to enjoy food and eat together, like he had experienced when he was younger. This communal experience of bonding over sharing food together is essential to the Mr Biryani brand concept.
Mr Biryani restaurant serves up Hyderabad style Dhum Biryani which has been adjusted for Singaporean tastes. Hyderabad Dhum Biryani is a dish that originated in Hyderabad, India and requires meticulous attention to avoid over or undercooking the meat, as it is marinated, layered with rice and cooked in a dough-sealed vessel. Chef Govind has created the biryani dishes from his own recipes using ingredients that he sources from the local market.
“Great food and the food was still hot upon delivery. My whole family enjoyed it. The portion was indeed more than for 5 to 6pax. Generous amount of the lamb kofta. The raita and the curry accompanying the main was also simply superb… Thank you Chef.”
“ Thank you for the opportunity of delivering the kofta briyani on Hari Raya. Sorry it's a late post but I must say I have been thinking about the briyani since then. It was def a tremendous amount for 5 pax with free delivery. I must say that I had purposely rationed the briyani all for myself more than for my family. There were generous amount of kofta balls. Each of it was big too. I must say the cucumber salad was awesome too. My kids were eating it just like that when especially they are not the vegetable eaters. Adding on to that, there were plenty of eggs to it. Getting briyani with lotsa kofta, egg, salad, curry and papadams for that amount with free delivery is unbeatable and not to be missed! ”
“I ordered Biryani Singapore's Lamb Kofta Biryani to supplement the dishes which I have prepared for my guests today. I was afraid there wasn't going to be enough food in case unexpected guests turn up, which usually happens during weekends. I chanced upon Biryani Singapore's FB page and saw pictures of the Lamb Kofta Biryani... that was the end of my search. I didn't regret not looking for other options. Chef Govind, your dish became the 'star' at my table and I don't believe it was because I was a bad cook. My guests asked where I ordered the biryani from and I am only glad to share your contact because I too think your biryani tastes great - fluffy rice, not too heavy. In fact, the taste was just right for me. Delivery came a little late, but it was worth the wait. Thank you, Mr Govind!”
For Chef Govind, cooking was part of his life as a younger child, where he started helping his grandfather out in the kitchen during temple festival events for large crowds. He also regularly cooked together with his family during family functions and events. This practice of cooking and sharing food together for large groups has been ingrained in him from young.
When he left the corporate world in 2008, after 18 years of experience in the hospitality industry, he started to work part time in restaurants, before setting up his own F&B catering business in 2010, which supplied cooked food to hotels and restaurants. He has since worked with many chefs from India from the Tamil Nadu and Andra Pradesh region. With Mr Biryani, he has nurtured his love and passion to know more about the cooking methods and techniques for making biryani.
Furthermore, with his appearance on many high-profile events and also participating in Mediacorp’s Vasanthan Central Cooking Competition, he began to get recognised within the Indian community, leading to him opening his first outlet called Mr Biryani at 32 Norris Road. Mr Biryani has consistently gotten 5-star ratings from the restaurant’s customers.
